Periodontology is the technical term for very severe gum inflammation. It can occur, for example, when food residue remains between your teeth for too long and if you do not brush your teeth properly. The debris then slowly penetrates the gums until it slides underneath, where it subsequently becomes inflamed. This starts innocently, for instance with bleeding gums when you brush your teeth, but this complaint can develop into a significant inflammation of the jawbone if left untreated. This causes the gums to recede, and your teeth may become loose or even fall out.
